Recent Dealership Experience: Financing

So I recently bought an A6 3.0T (where oddly the T means supercharged, ha!). I became re-acquainted with just how awful a traditional dealership experience is. I won’t get into all my gripes, right now I’m just curious. I was told over the phone by one of several people that I dealt with (I never seemed to have just one person assigned to me) that he was unable to disclose interest rates over the phone.

Kinja'd!!!

To me it feels like a tactic to get me into the door and swooning over the car. And also a tactic to discourage me from shopping around for loans. I had also requested he include Chase in my credit applications, he did not.

So yeah, is that true or not? Can they not disclose interest rates over the phone? It seemed very fishy to me, and I wouldn’t put it past these slimy bastards.

This was a pristine CJD dealership, btw.

Well I’ve had interest rates disclosed to me over the phone (and email) in both Illinois and Michigan...

If my broker can give me interest rates over the phone and email, then certainly some schmuck at a used car lot could.

I always have financing in place I’m comfortable with before I even speak with a dealer . If they can beat those terms, then fine.  But I’ve never had it happen.

I bought my M3 over the phone and never set foot in the dealer, all the paperwork was done over the phone, including the financing. I don’t believe your dealer at all.

CJD dealers are the worst, with Kia second worst.

They absolutely can disclose them, they just chose not to and lied about it.

How do you like the A6 so far?

Okay, that gives me more ammo for the extremely scathing review I plan on writing, haha.

The A6 is awesome! And I got it $2k under bluebook, for one that spent most of its life on an Audi Care plan.

I’m coming from a Taurus SHO, so this thing feels like a go-kart by comparison. I attribute it to being a more nimble chassis, a bit lighter and it’s a rwd/awd platform as opposed the fwd/awd platform for the Taurus. The Supercharged engine has really awesome and immediate acceleration. Even though on paper the SHO is a smidge faster (and a lot faster with the tune I had), the Audi feels quicker, just because it’s feels like more of a drivers car I suppose would sum it up. The Taurus was excellent at being a comfortable cruiser though.

Great. I will include that as another negative mark in my review (and I have an extensive mental list going, haha) .

It’s just so frustrating that they followed through on absolutely nothing they promised, which dragged everything out for hours.

Gotcha, I’m gearing up to write a rather negative review of this place. This makes it that much better.

I hope that the  transaction worked out well, regardless, and that you love the car. If you feel your interest rate is too high, you can still shop around and re-finance it, usually without any penalty (most states don’t allow prepayment penalties but read your fine print).

There are a LOT of dealers out there who will say anything to try to get you in the door -and that’s all they will do via phone/email. I try to avoid those places like the plague, but sometimes they’re the only ones who have the car you want.  Next time, I recommend shopping around for financing before you walk in the dealer’s door - I’ve done that for the last 20 years, and it’s worked out well.

If you’re buying new, the manufacturer can often beat bank/CU rates - but your way is absolutely the best way to do it (and how I do it too).

Last several cars I’ve bought I had financing from my credit union in place already. Made it a whole different experience and much better.

I have an employees only credit union at my work that both gives awesome rates and makes it crazy easy though so that helps.

My favorite time now is when I get to spend 30 minutes with the finance person to finish the paperwork saying no I already have a check cut for the sales price I am not adding a warranty or vin etching or ass  waxing and so on...

Thanks, I kind of realized what was happening, but I was lazy and figured my interest rate would be fine since I have very good credit. And it was alright, but I imagine I could’ve done better. I’ll see about getting it refinanced if it can be done without penalty or fees. I will likely pay it off so quickly that it won’t be a big deal. I mostly got the loan as a way of having the freedom of having more cash on hand, as tax-time is always interesting for me.

So yeah, even when I was there it all felt sleazy, but hey, they had the best-priced A6 in a 300 mile radius. And to boot it had the options I wanted, man do I love that wood- grain and brown leather interior. So I’m happy with the car and thankfully I never have to set foot in that dealership again. So overall I can chalk it up to a shitty experience.

I’ll probably write my negative review and move on, haha. I hate being confrontational. So I’m already picturing them seeing my name attached to the google review and being all pissed. But they deserve it right? Haha.

Haha yeah. At least I was spared all the warranty bullshit because they  at least had the decency to realize I wouldn’t be taking my Audi to CJD dealership.

This is true (I usually buy gently used, so not usually an option). However, even new, if there’s a choice between a cash rebate and cheap financing, sometimes it still makes sense to use external financing. Another good trick with new if there’s a rebate/incentive that requires manufacturer financing is to take the manufacturer loan, and then refinance through your credit union if the rate is higher .

it happens...  you can refi car loans though, so if you got stuck with a crappy rate, call around.

Very true! I always forget that because it’s been a long time ( 1996) since I had to choose between a rebate and low financing. Seems to be a Big 3 thing, and my last few cars have either been German or Japanese.
